Jack McKinney, who brought the up-tempo style of play that came to be known as Showtime to the Los Angeles Lakers in 1979 but lasted only 13 games as their coach after a bicycle accident put him in a coma, led to his firing and left a haunting “what if” over his career, died on Tuesday at a hospice in Bonita Springs, Fla. He was 83. His daughter Susan McKinney said the cause was complications of the brain injury.

“If he hadn’t had the accident,” Riley told The Los Angeles Times in 2006, “he might have won five or six titles for the Lakers in the ’80s.” McKinney felt that his short tenure with the Lakers precluded him from having a part in the franchise’s folklore. “I just put in some ideas that were accepted, and the rest was up to Paul and Pat and some great players,” he said.

“I think the effects of the head injury made it too stressful — he had so many balls in the air as a coach — and it became too much,” his wife, Claire (Cranny) McKinney, said by telephone. “He came home one day and said, ‘I’m going to retire but don’t tell anyone.’ ” He left coaching — although he harbored hopes that he might get a job as an assistant coach — and worked for a company selling sportswear to Philadelphia’s professional teams and running coaching clinics around the world. He spent the 1993 season as a Philadelphia 76ers television analyst.

McKinney was selected the NBA’s Coach of the Year for that season, surpassing San Antonio’s Stan Albeck in the voting, 27-25. His next two teams dropped to 35 and 20 wins, however, as Nassi liquidated the roster to curb financial losses. McKinney’s team improved to 26 wins during the first year of ownership for Mel and Herb Simon, but he was replaced after that season by George Irvine. Martinsville native and Purdue grad Jerry Sichting, who played all four seasons for McKinney, once said he didn’t believe McKinney every fully recovered from the head injuries suffered in the bicycle accident. “He was great in how he treated people and his knowledge of the game, but he was forgetful with names and stuff like that,” Sichting said. “You couldn’t do anything but feel sorry for him when those things came up. He also had trouble concentrating when it got really loud in the arena. I…learned a lot from him, but there’s no question that bicycle wreck had an impact on him.”

McKinney was named the Los Angeles Lakers’ coach in 1979, but he went on leave after 14 games after suffering serious head injuries in a bicycle accident that left him in a coma for three days. The Lakers, led by Paul Westhead, went on to win the NBA title, and he retained the job. Neurological issues stayed with McKinney the rest of his life.

George said he has a similar personality as Embiid, who keeps to himself and has a smaller circle than many NBA megastars. But they began chatting at All-Star Weekends, and George eventually looked forward to seeing Embiid as they became near-annual selections. The friendship reached another level when, George said, Embiid “opened up to me.” “He said, ‘Man, regardless of what goes on, I look at you as someone that I want to be friends with for a long part of my life,’” George recalled. “And that was deep to me. We knew each other, but we didn’t know each other on that level yet. And for him to just open up to me, it felt right. …

An agreement exists between the NBA and FIBA that governs the movement of players back and forth, and so Sacramento had to wait until he was a free agent overseas and had an interest in coming to the NBA. To lure him over, they guaranteed him $13 million, with a team option for 2025-26. A guaranteed contract works both ways. Vezenkov did not have a player option for 2024-25, and so when reports surfaced that he wanted to return overseas, he couldn’t just leave; the NBA-FIBA agreement wouldn’t allow him to break a contract with his NBA team.

“When I took the job you know it was a veteran laden team,” Billups said. “Melo [Anthony] was actually still on the roster. I really took the job thinking that I was going to be coaching him. You know with Dame [Lillard] and CJ [McCollum], Nurk [Nurkic]. So it was perfect for me, I’m thinking okay boom, a few moves here and there, I’m coming to like try to elevate things and then very quickly it changed.”
