GAMBIER, Ohio -- The Kenyon College football team is looking for growth from last season's youthful roster as underclassmen make up over two-thirds of the 2024 squad. With continuity and experience at the top of the coaching staff and a strong crop of returning contributors, the Owls will try to develop both sides of the ball while competing in the strong North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC).
2023 Review:- 2-8 overall record, including a 2-3 mark at home and an 0-5 road record.
- 2-6 mark against NCAC opponents, which ranked seventh in the nine-team conference standings.
NCAC Preseason Poll:
The Owls slotted into seventh in the annual NCAC Preseason Football Coaches' Poll with 26 points. DePauw University claimed the top spot in the nine-team standings, tallying 77 points and receiving six of the nine first-place votes. Wabash College (68 points), Wittenberg University (61), and Denison University (59) each received a first-place vote and rounded out the top four teams in the projections. Ohio Wesleyan University (49) and The College of Wooster (34) checked in above Kenyon, while Hiram College (16) and Oberlin College (15) rounded out the preseason voting.
Key Returners:- Andy Canonico - Coming off of back-to-back All-NCAC Second Team seasons, he led the Owls with 8.5 tackles for loss and two blocked kicks while ranking second in sacks (3.5) and quarterback hits (7). Additionally, his 49 tackles ranked were fifth-most on the team and he was one of two defenders to force a fumble.
- Park Penrod - An All-NCAC Third Team honoree as a punter after averaging 35.08 yards per boot with 15 punts landing inside the 20-yard line, he also lined up under center and was second on the team with 534 passing yards and four passing touchdowns while ranking third on the team with 228 rushing yards and two more scores.
- Dominic Simpson - Earned All-NCAC Third Team honors as a first-year after leading the team with 88 tackles, three interceptions, and two forced fumbles. He also added a pair of tackles for loss and pass breakups.
- Dylan Carlquist - Led the team with 352 receiving yards and four touchdown receptions while tallying the third-most receptions (23).
- Nolan Dirks - His 130 rushing yards as a first-year ranked fourth on the team while his two rushing touchdowns tied for third.
- Drake Lewis - Ranked second on the team with 353 rushing yards and five rushing touchdowns in 2023, the second-most total touchdowns on the team.
- David Livingston - Paced the Owls with 30 catches while racking up the third-most receiving yards (268). He also led the team with 15 kick returns and 232 yards on those returns.
- Charlie Taylor - His 351 receiving yards, 24 receptions, and two receiving scores all ranked second on the team.
- Jackson Belyn - Intercepted two passes as a first-year, good for second on the squad, while adding 11 tackles and a pair of pass breakups.
- Luke Caress - Paced Kenyon with four sacks and eight quarterback hits while ranking third at 6.5 tackles for loss.
- Jared Hanco*ck - Tallied 56 total tackles, the second-best mark on the team. Added two pass breakups, 1.5 tackles for loss, and half a sack.
- Jackson McCullough - He broke up nine passes as a first-year, the team's top mark, and he was one of two defenders to recover a fumble. He also added 32 tackles.
- Kendall Weaver - His six pass breakups ranked second on the team, and his 52 total tackles ranked fourth. He also snagged an interception that he returned for a pick-six as a first-year.
- Tyler Bell - Ranked second on the team with 34 total points after converting 22-of-23 extra points and 4-of-7 field goals. He also handled the team's kickoff duties, averaging 50.3 yards and notching seven touchbacks.
Key Departures:
- Jordon Benjamin - Broke out last season and earned an All-NCAC Second Team selection after leading the Owls with 54 total points, nine total touchdowns, 832 rushing yards, and eight rushing touchdowns. His 131 receiving yards ranked fourth, and he added a receiving score.
- Nate Braus, Cole Kirol, Nate Stuart, Chris Zaizer - Four graduated seniors who were starters along the offensive line. Zaiser was an All-NCAC Third Team honoree in 2023, while Stuart secured an All-NCAC Second Team spot in 2022.
- Henry Wendorf - Led Kenyon with 856 passing yards and five passing touchdowns while starting six of the team's 10 games under center as a first-year. Also added a rushing touchdown.
- Cole Garrison - As a senior, he ranked second on the team with 7.5 tackles for loss, third with four quarterback hits, and fourth with two sacks.
- Tommy Iannuzzi - Racked up 55 tackles as a senior, the team's third-best mark. He also ranked third in sacks (3), tied for third with an interception, and ranked fourth in both tackles for loss (5) and quarterback hits (3).
